100 år siden «White Horse Final»

I dag, 28. april, er det 100 år siden den første kampen ble spilt på den originale Wembley Stadium.

Selv om det offisielle oppmøtet var 126 047, anslås det at over 200 000 mennesker faktisk var til stede på kampen som var FA cup-finalen mellom Bolton Wanderers og West Ham United.

Kampen ente 2-0 til Bolton. Mål fra David Jack og John Smith sikret seieren og kaptein Joe Smith kunne motta trofeet fra kong George V.

Kampen skulle bli kjent som «White Horse Final» da den enorme folkemengdene ble presset tilbake bak sidelinjen av en hvit politihest ved navn Billy.

«The final was preceded by chaotic scenes as vast crowds surged into the stadium, far exceeding its official capacity of approximately 125,000. A crowd estimated at up to 300,000 gained entrance and the terraces overflowed, with the result that many spectators found their way into the area around the pitch and even onto the playing area itself. Mounted policemen, including one on a grey horse which became the defining photographic image of the day, had to be brought in to clear the crowds from the pitch and allow the match to take place. The match began 45 minutes late as the vast crowd was shepherded by police to clear the pitch and stand around the perimeter.»
