The experienced figure, who joined the club last summer, has scooped the accolade with 37% of votes submitted by Whites supporters.

He has made 30 appearances in league and cup this season, scoring three times against Rotherham United, Millwall and Wigan Athletic.

A stalwart in the heart of the Trotters’ midfield, the 35-year-old has proven himself an integral member of Phil Parkinson’s squad during the current campaign for the football club.

Luca Connell has been named as Young Player of the Year meanwhile following his breakthrough season in senior football.

Speaking about the award, O’Neil said: «It is always nice when you get these sorts of personal accolades.

«It has been a tough year for everyone at the club, but this is a nice little bonus for what has been a difficult time for everybody.

«I would 100% have swapped this accolade for the team staying in the division.

«The Player of the Year award is never the most important thing, but I appreciate everyone who voted for me.»
